Modern Pilates Teacher Training

Mat, Reformer + Anatomy Course Requirements:

300 hours: 100 apprentice teaching + 60 taking classes + 60 self-guided study/practice + 50 observing classes + 40 lectures

Participants are also required to read Pilates Return to Life through Contrology by Joseph Pilates and enroll in Adam McAtee’s Foundations of Anatomy + Biomechanics Club or other anatomy course (must be approved by Lead Teacher Trainer).

To receive a certificate of completion, participants must pass a final test including a practical and written exam. Please review our Teacher Training Terms + Conditions prior to reserving your spot. It is required that all participants agree to them.

Teacher training includes both in-person lectures and self-guided study/practice hours, as outlined above. Lectures will be held at both the Rochester and Canandaigua studios.

Course Description

Led by The Reformery cofounder, Hannah McMullen, this training is an in-depth education on the Pilates method. Open to anyone interested in deepening their Pilates practice and/or teaching Pilates, it includes the history, evolution and application of Pilates, including the classical method and our modern approach.

Participants will leave the training with a comprehensive knowledge of how to effectively teach mat and Reformer Pilates in a private + group setting. The Reformer course will include exercises and how to teach on both the XFormer and Balanced Body Allegro 2.

The Reformery Mat + Reformer Teacher Training is a NASM/AFAA Approved Provider. Graduates are not guaranteed employment at The Reformery but are guaranteed an audition to work at The Reformery. 

Meet the Educators

Hannah McMullen is co-author and the lead educator for the teacher training, as well as co-founder and instructor at The Reformery. Prior to opening The Reformery, Hannah taught in NYC and has almost a decade of experience in the Pilates industry. This is her fourth teacher training session training and many graduates are currently teaching at The Reformery and at other Rochester-area studios.

Olivia is an assistant educator and has been an instructor at The Reformery for 3 years. She also teaches yoga, specializing in perinatal practice and works as a birth and postpartum doula.

Amanda Pignato is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and instructor at The Reformery. Amanda leads the Functional Anatomy coursework.

  • No! This training is open to anyone.

  • No, but your test out can be an audition (if you want). It is possible to pass the audition but not be hired at The Reformery but it is likely that if you choose to use your test out as an audition, you could be added to the sub list right away and offered classes when they become available.

  • Yes. Remote options or makeup sessions may be available for certain dates, upon request. Please reference the terms and conditions for more details.

  • After passing the exams, you will receive a digital certification showing that you completed The Reformery Modern Pilates teacher training program.

  • While we don’t require it, we highly encourage some Pilates experience so you have a basic background of the method prior to the training.

  • No, we recommend trying many studios with different styles and vibes to help you find what you connect with most. However, you might find deeper connections from your lectures + coursework when you take classes at The Reformery.

  • No, because it is not required to take all of your classes at The Reformery. However, participants will get a 50% discount on drop-in class credits at The Reformery when using those classes towards the required coursework.

  • Yes, participants must complete and test-out within 1 year of the start date.

  • Class hours can be done virtually, however if you are participating in the reformer training, your class hours need to be spent on a reformer.

    Observation hours should be done in person. However, if you have geographical or scheduling concerns that limit your ability to do this, our lead trainers will work with you to find an online observation option.

    For observation hours, you must be able to observe both the instructor and the clients.

  • Yes, we will discuss the history and evolution of Pilates and teach trainees about the classical repertoire.
